Days later, Eddie and Chris watching tv in El Paso

TV Announcer: Again, our top story is that a strange bisexual man has built a full size replica of the Eiffel Tower- made entirely of lemon tort. Six people have died. And it has drawn back the swarm of killer bees from before.

Chris: Dad… is Buck ok?

Eddie: Chris, I can’t be honest about that and still stay here in El Paso.

Chris: oh.

Snippet that was stuck in my head. based off the last ep.

Eddie has been in El Paso for 3 weeks when he gets the call. He’s standing at his barren fridge in his rented apartment, trying to figure out what he and Chris can have for dinner when his phone rings from the living room. By the time he’s gotten to the couch to answer, it’s stopped ringing. The screen lights up with one unread voicemail.

It’s from Buck.

He feels a smile tugging at his lips as he calls him back- without listening to the voicemail. An automated voice greets him.

“You have reached the voicemail box of *click* Evan Buckley. Please leave your message aft-”

He hangs up and redials. He’s greeted by the same message. Again. And again.

With a frown pressing down his eyebrows, he opens the voicemail from Buck. A tired voice greets him.

“Hey Eds, it’s Buck.” A rough coughing fit cuts through the speaker. “Sorry… I’m not… I don’t think… I’m not making it out…”

Eddie’s grip on his phone is turning white as a sinking feeling drags at his gut. He stumbles to sit at the couch as Buck keeps going.

“I miss you Eddie… and Chris…” A cough that sounds wetter than any of the previous ones. Eddie grabs the remote and tries to find the news channel without looking.

“You’re ‘n amazin’ dad… ‘mazing person… ‘m so lucky… had you for a while” A sharp metallic screech and a choked gasp echo as a puff piece about a charity auction appears on the news. Buck’s next words are even more slurred.

“You ‘re so nice t’me. ‘lways havin’ me ‘ver s’like a home. I miss you Eds. [quiet sniffle] ‘m so stupid. ‘m not supposed t’ be waitin’. You’ve left me.” Eddie’s next breath catches in his throat. Remote abandoned as he focuses on Buck’s fading voice, the muted tv showing off a vintage toy car for auction.

“Sorry. ‘didn’t leave… ‘m just bein’ dramatic. S’cause I love you. [pause] Y’know that, righ’? Mmm I’d’ve come wi’ y’u ‘f y’asked. Gone ‘nywher’ f’r y’u. S’okay tho’.” And then quieter, as if to himself. “S’okay. ‘m goin’ now.”

There’s a soft exhale into the mic and a quiet “love you, love Chris.” Then nothing. None of the raspy breathing that had rattled after every word or any sounds of fabric rustling as Buck tried to get comfortable, where ever he was.

Eddie is frozen on the couch. He doesn’t think he’s going to move again. Ever.

I’m really glad that Eddie is taking the initiative to mend the bridge between him and Chris. Their relationship is so imperative and must be maintained above all else.

I am also devastated that now Buck will be abandoned again by someone he loves when it has happened so many times.

This is it this is the endgame I swear bro I can see it. Buck is finally realizing the depth and complexity of his feelings now that he's faced with Eddie leaving him. Leaving him like Tommy did. He's already going through such a hard time after Tommy but now he's thinking about it being Eddie that's gone and he's now hit with the soul crushing realization that being apart from Eddie feels more disastrous and devastating than losing Tommy ever could.

And that is a terrifying epiphany....

He heard his best friend is moving out and the first thing he did was to help him find a suitable place for him. He didn’t object or tried to change Eddie’s mind.

He just helped her pack her bags and dropped her at the airport.

He dismissed whatever he was feeling until Eddie looked away.

Until the minute that she turned her back to him and walked into the airport.

He has come a long way but… Buck’s still Buck.
